Rapid Bridge Project Completes Second Local Bridge Replacement

The Public-Private Partnership (P3) project to rebuild 558 bridges all across Pennsylvania over the next three years completed its second bridge replacement project at the end of October with the reopening of the Freeport Road crossing over Glade Run in North Buffalo Township.

The bridge reopened to traffic Saturday, October 24.

The work was performed by CH & D Enterprises, a Pennsylvania-based bridge and highway contractor.

The new crossing is longer and wider than the one it replaced and is designed to last as long as 100 years. The original bridge was built in 1922, and carried about 2,000 vehicles per day.

The bridge replacements are part of the Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, a Public-Private Partnership (P3) between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners (PWKP) under which PWKP will finance, design, replace and maintain the bridges for 25 years. As part of PWKP, Walsh/Granite JV will oversee construction.

The P3 approach will allow PennDOT to replace the bridges more quickly while achieving significant savings and minimizing impact on motorists.
