Both Armstrong School District girls` volleyball teams earned a spot in the second round of the WPIAL tournament and maintained their perfect seasons this week.
Thursday, it was West Shamokin’s turn to prove their might against the Waynesburg Raiders – who played into the tournament after a victory against Mohawk Tuesday night.
But, Waynesburg’s luck ran out against the undefeated and No. 2-ranked Lady Wolves. Senior Captain Sierra Dailey and the Lady Wolves posted three straight match victories Thursday night at Norwin High School, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-11.
“We started out really strong (but) plateau-ed throughout the night. We didn’t have our best game, but it was good enough to win,” Dailey said. “Overall, I think it was pretty successful.”
Head Coach Dan Spencer said Dailey’s serves were a crucial part of the win.
“I thought we served very well,” Coach Spencer said. “I think it was the biggest factor of the game. We didn’t serve-receive I think as well as we should have, but (Waynesburg) serve-received worse than we did, so we took advantage of their bad passing
Dailey credited “a pretty-good student section” with keeping the Lady Wolves’ spirits high.
“We had a lot of support (at Norwin); more than I thought we would,” Dailey said. “We’ve had support, but nothing like this year. This year, they really stepped up – we have the support of the whole school, so it’s really nice to see.”
The Lady Wolves hope to keep rolling through Class AA when they battle Central Valley (a combination of the previous-Center Area and Monaca school districts in Beaver County) Tuesday night at a neutral site.
“You can’t afford to make a lot of errors, and I thought tonight, we made too many passing errors,” Coach Spencer said. “Everything counts – its that time of year where you just got to avoid mistakes.
“Not that we didn’t do a lot of good things – you just want to minimize the things you did bad.”
The Lady Wolves start preparing for the Lady Warriors – who swept their first-round matchup versus Hopewell – after school.
