A passenger was taken to a local hospital yesterday after being injured in a four-vehicle accident along Route 422 in Manor Township.

The crash occurred about 3:45PM near the intersection with Scenic Drive (known as the streets to get to businesses such as Trader Horn and Sheetz)

Manor Township and Kittanning Township volunteer firefighters responded to the incident, as well as two Pennsylvania State Police units.

Even though an incident from the State Police was not available before today’s edition, Manor Township Assistant Fire Chief Matt Klingensmith said it looked as if the driver of a coal bucket truck initially ran into the back of a Volvo SUV.

The SUV then proceeded to become stuck under a Ford F-150 truck and the truck hit into the back bumper of a van belonging to DLC Expediting Courier of Johnstown.

“Definitely probably (traveling) too fast for the way the roads are, the conditions,” Assistant Chief Klingensmith said. “It could’ve been a lot worse than what it is.”

A front-seat Volvo passenger was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin via Kittanning #6 Ambulance after suffering facial injuries.

The SUV, truck and van all had to be towed from the scene by Mohney’s Towing. Along with the bumper damage to all, two of the vehicles had their rear windshields broken and extensive front-end damage.

There was only front bumper damage to the coal bucket truck.

“It had to have been one hell of an impact to cause so much damage,” Assistant Chief Klingensmith said. “They hit pretty hard.”

Assistant Chief Klingensmith said Kittanning Township crews were primarily called in case there were entrapped motorists, but none had to be pulled out of their respective vehicles Wednesday afternoon.

He said a motorist driving through the intersection also rendered aid before emergency crews arrived.

The accident blocked three lanes of oncoming motorists and caused firefighters to temporarily switch the direction of another to maintain traffic flow.

I live on Scenic drive. The trucks constantly FLY thru that light. Several times I have been almost hit. Luckily no one was killed yesterday. I think there needs to be more police watching that area. They could support the whole county from fines. From parking along and on the roads to speeding. Also people use the west bound turn lane as a thru lane. It needs improvement.
