BUFFONE: Top 5 Mommy Moments in Sports History

by John Buffone

In honor of this upcoming Mother’s Day, I have decided to list the top five best mommy moments in sports history. After all, athletes can be some of the biggest “Mama’s Boys” out there.

5. Kim Clijsters Becomes First Mom Ranked No. 1: In 2011, Clijsters catapulted over Caroline Wozniacki for the no. 1 ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association. Nothing like a mother’s ferocious backhand to promote good behavior among the kids.

4. Red Sox Complete Mother’s Day Miracle in 2007: Bottom of the ninth, one out and the Sox were down 5-0 to the Baltimore Orioles. After a barrage of hits and good luck, the Sox came back to win and give Boston mothers a special gift.

3. Dallas Braden Throws Perfect Game on Mother’s Day 2010: As if a perfect game wasn’t enough, the underdog pitcher was able to complete the feat in front of his grandmother who guided him through a rough upbringing in central California.

2. Paula Radcliffe Wins 2007 NYC Marathon Nine Months After Giving Birth: Radcliffe gave birth to daughter Isla in February and followed up by winning the NYC Marathon in November with a time of 2:23:09. That’ll burn up that baby fat pretty darn quick.

1. Gerald McCoy Dedicates Draft Day to Mother: Gerald McCoy was drafted taken #3 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft but delayed his celebration to honor his mother whom he lost three years earlier. McCoy had his mother’s initials stitched onto the cuff of his shirt and not a dry eye remained after watching him look to the sky and proclaim, “I made it, Mom. I made it.”
