BUFFONE: Pirates and Power Preview

by John Buffone

The sun could be shining this weekend but it won’t be able to compete with the luster of the sports schedule in the next couple days. The Pittsburgh Pirates (26-29) will begin the battle of the Keystone State when they host the Philadelphia Phillies (34-22) for a three-game series at PNC Park. Today’s and Saturday’s games will begin at 7:05pm while game three will being at 1:35 pm on Sunday. The Pittsburgh Power (6-4) will be back at home when they battle the Cleveland Gladiators (6-4) for first place in the East Division of American conference. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm at the Consol Energy Center. The Power are currently riding a three-game winning streak since re-installing week one starting quarterback Bernard Morris and are in good shape to make the playoffs in their inaugural year in the Arena Football League.

BUFFONE: Stolitza Headed to IUP

by John Buffone

It looks as though Kittanning’s all-time leading scorer in boy’s basketball has chosen his future path. According to reports, Nathan Stolitza has decided that he’ll play for Indiana University of Pennsylvania next year as a preferred walk-on. As a high school senior, Stolitza averaged 27.3 points per game and finished his high school career with 1347 points, the most in KHS history. Stolitza led the Wildcats to their best start in years when they began the season 5-0 before eventually going 10-12 overall. As a walk-on, the 6’1 guard is not guaranteed a spot on the Crimson Hawks squad who is a perennial powerhouse in Division II basketball. IUP went 26-6 last year while winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). The Crimson Hawks made it the Division II National Championship Game in 2010 before losing to Cal Poly Pomona.
