Superintendent Says West Shamokin Students Will Have to Make Up Days

ASD Superintendent Chris DeVivo said that West Shamokin students can expect a revision in their school calendar due to the delay of the start of school. He did not state if it would affect seniors or graduation.

Armstrong School District Superintendent Chris DeVivo updated the school board last night during its caucus meeting regarding the status of the mold issue at West Shamokin Junior-Senior High School.

He said that staff was brought into the building for an in-service day and that is when more mold was identified.

“It was isolated to the classroom wing. As we got people in the building, we found other trouble spot areas.”

DeVivo said last night that he was not anticipating further problems to delay school.

“This thing changes daily, depending on outside weather conditions, and other factors involved. Some of the days we take two steps forward and three steps back. But right now, we are gaining and making progress, so I am comfortable that we are going to have students in the building on Tuesday (September 11).”

He said that West Shamokin students can expect to put in a few more days because of the delay.

“There will probably have to be a revision to the school calendar for the West Shamokin students. We have enough instructional hours to accommodate a day or two, but since we had five days off, we will probably have to make some type of revision to the school calendar.”

Also at the meeting, DeVivo announced that there was a contribution of $200,000 made by Nextier/ESS Insurance Group for naming rights to the new athletic complex at Armstrong High School. The contribution will give the Nextier/ESS name to the complex for the next ten years. DeVivo said there will be several signs, including one on the press box and one at the entrance to the stadium. The school board will vote next Monday night to make the name official.
