It’s Part of the Learning Process, Elementary Teacher Says

Mrs. Jammie Myers greeted her students outside her third grade classroom at Lenape Elementary on the first day of school.

Jammie Myers is a 3rd grade teacher at Lenape Elementary in Ford City. She decided to make the first day back to school memorable for her and her students.

“Tuesday marked the first day of a new school year and with that, brings a whole new year of learning, friendships, exploring, and adventures. On my end as a teacher, it’s a brand new start to 189 days of taking 22 new students under my wings. My every day is spent smiling with them, encouraging them to give their best and most importantly guiding them in being kind and treating others as they would want to be treated. Every new group I have has something unique to offer and you’re always sad to let them go at the end of the year, so when several people shared an amazing idea with me, I knew I wanted to do it. Attached are pictures of me wearing the “White Dress” that my past 4 years of students designed all on their own. Each class that I had taught my first 4 years at Lenape Elementary were all still here last year, so for the last month of school last year every one of them visited my classroom again to design their own section of “The White Dress”.

Myers wore the now infamous “white dress” on Tuesday, but said she plans to wear it again to each of the graduations of the students who helped create it.

“To me the dress is a beautiful way to show my students that they forever make a mark on me and that I’ll take them with me for the rest of my life. It’s not just a school year, but a lifetime that they each give me - helping mold me into the teacher and person I am.”

School Principal Mr. Chris Hooks was impressed with Myers’ approach.

“She is a wonderful teacher,” Hooks said. “We are lucky to have her. She does these things outside the box to engage her students and get them excited about learning.”
