Appointed Mayor, Councilman Take North Apollo Seats

by Jonathan Weaver

Anew mayor and councilman took their respective seats after the first 15 minutes of North Apollo Borough’s special council meeting last night.

Newly-appointed Mayor Denny McCain and Councilman Patrick Ellenberger were sworn into office.

McCain, 65 of 19TH Street, was the only mayoral candidate and was sworn in by now-Council President Debbie Stankus.

The 20-year borough resident last worked as a school bus driver and has never been elected.

“I live in the town, I know the people and hopefully I can help out,” McCain said.

Former Mayor Ed Artman – who was serving in his second term - died December 18 at ACMH Hospital.

Councilwoman Laura Ford looked forward to McCain’s leadership.

“He’s a great guy – he’ll be a fantastic mayor,” Ford said.

Three community residents applied to be the next councilmember to fill Council President Edwin Barclay’s seat, but Ellenberger was unanimously appointed.

Ellenberger, 45 of Center Avenue, will serve as councilman until the first Monday of January 2016. He was sworn in by McCain.

The former Apollo resident who moved back into the borough three years ago is also a first-time applicant, and looks forward to street improvements and bringing more revenue into the municipality.

Ellenberger currently works for Rosebud Mining – based in Kittanning.

Council President Stankus – who is in her first year of public service after re-election – said “seems like a go-getter” after nominating Ellenberger for the position.

Eugene Burns was nominated and approved as Council Vice-President.

“I think we’ll be able to move forward now,” Burns said.
