A long-standing community Halloween tradition will continue tomorrow night along the streets of Kittanning Borough.
The annual Halloween Parade will begin at 7PM rain-or-shine in front of the Kittanning Hose Company #1 fire house on South Jefferson Street.
Leading the parade will be the Armstrong Junior High School Band, Hose Company #1 President Jerry Shuster said. He explained that, since Ford City Borough has a parade tomorrow night at the same time, the junior high and the senior high bands will alternate communities each year.
“I made the suggestion to the school administration, and they were very cooperative, as were the band directors,” Shuster said. “We didn’t feel any particular issue developed.
We’re looking forward to the junior high band lead the parade. I think they’ll really feel good about themselves, and we’re looking forward to giving them that honor.”
The parades were the last time Shuster – then a member of the high school band - dressed up in costume. Students are also encouraged to dress in costume tomorrow night.
At least $400 will be given in prizes (based on imagination, originality and creativity), and each participant will receive a monetary award as long as paraders are in costume and register.
The parade comes a day after tonight’s trick-or-treating throughout the borough, from 6-8PM.
Hose Company #1 Fire Chief Gene Stephens expected about a dozen volunteers just from Hose Company #1 will be among those that patrol the streets tonight. Even more volunteers locally will come from Hose Company #4 and #6 and other departments.
“#1, #4, and #6 will be out, Applewold, Rayburn – everywhere there will be trick-or-treat, there will be fire departments out on patrol to help protect the kids,” Chief Stephens said.
Chief Stephens said there have not been many, if any, dangerous or destructive incidents during trick-or-treating because of the response or the parental presence.
Kittanning Borough Police officers request that homeowners participating in trick-or-treating turn on outside lights for added security and to welcome children.
