Kittanning Fire Departments Hold Multi-Company Drill

Fire fighters place mannequins found in a smoke-filled building on the ground as Hose Company #6 Fire Chief Scott Kline keeps track of their assignments.

Smoke filled the night sky as Kittanning Hose Companies 1, 4, and 6 held a multi-company drill in order to practice some firefighting fundamentals in downtown Kittanning Wednesday night.

The drill was held in a building located right next to Kittanning Hose Company #6. The Fire Company currently owns the building and is planning to eventually tear it down and use the space for a parking lot. Until then, #6 is planning on staging a few more practices in the building and inviting other fire companies that participate in their mutual aid.

“We put some mannequins within the building, smoked it up, and gave the guys an opportunity to go in and do some search and rescue techniques, some ladder practices, and ventilation practices,” said Hose Company #6 Fire Chief Scott Kline. “We had all three companies from town up to do some practice so that we’re ready to do the real thing.”

According to Kline, the practice, which used smoke bombs to simulate fire conditions, resulted in the older, more seasoned firefighters coming out to help the younger guys learn some of the tricks of the trade.

“It was very successful,” said Kline. “There were a lot of new guys that actually got as close to an experience without actually having a building on fire as they could get. Everything was a success, and there was good participation from each of the Kittanning departments.”
