United Way Takes Temperature of Local Donations
United Way Chairperson Jane Hess and her dog Luke post a thermometer at the end of the Citizens Bridge in Kittanning to remind motorists of their 2010 goal.
Volunteers of the United Way of Armstrong County spent yesterday afternoon posting large thermometers displaying the progress of their 2010 campaign to raise money for local non-profit organizations.
This year’s goal for the organization is $150,000. Jane Hess is the Chairperson for the campaign, and so far the United Way of Armstrong County has reached 40% of the goal. They are hoping to fill their thermometer all the way to the top.
“We have brochures, flyers, a gas incentive with Bradigans, and now these thermometers to let people know we need their help,” said Deed Anthony who is heavily involved with the project.
The thermometers are posted in three prime parts of Armstrong County to show the progress of the campaign.
While raising money is not easy for anyone these days, the workers at United Way are excited to see the effort that Armstrong County residents put forth to raise money each year for non-profit organizations.
Those that benefit from United Way funds include fifteen member agencies: accessAbilities, ARC Manor, Armstrong County YMCA, The ARC, Boy Scouts Moraine Trails Council, Catholic Charities, Comunity Action Mentoring Program, Freeport Council of Churches Food Bank, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, Life Choices, Lifesteps, Mechling-Shakley Veterans Center, Multiple Sclerosis Service Society, The Salvation Army, and The Salvation Army Service Unit.
The money that is donated is distributed evenly among the participating organizations unless specifically designated for one organization by the donor.
