08/21/1969 – Charles Jordan, 27, of Kittanning, RD 7 hopes to hit it lucky by shooting his way to the 7th annual national outdoor archery championship in Flint, Mich. this weekend.

08/21/1969 – Members of Local 14 of the Glassworkers Union jammed the Ford City Union Hall last night to find out what lay ahead for them in the wake of a lay-off at PPG Industries, Inc. They were told by union president Russell Schrecengost that no jobs in the plant would be protected. All jobs will be filled by seniority, putting younger men on the street first.

08/21/1969 – Thomas Hall, 24, of Ford City RD3 is listed in satisfactory condition in the hospital with cuts and bruises suffered in a motorcycle accident. His Honda M-C struck some loose gravel causing the bike to slide out from under him. He was traveling south near Logansport.

08/21/1969 - Armstrong County School District is attempting to determine the number of pre-school handicapped children in the county. The information will help the schools plan for the next five years to accommodate students who are mentally retarded, physically handicapped, emotionally disturbed, blind or partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing, or has a severe speech problem.

08/21/1969 – A forestry training camp at Penn State University included local boys: Joe Discus sponsored by Barrett Lumber of Dayton; Mark Fiscus, sponsored by Myron Shoffner of Kittanning; Mark Boyer, sponsored by Perrh andMegnin Stave Mill of Whitesburg; and Larry McCall, sponsored by Henry Shaffer Lumber Co of Kittanning. They were taught skills of fire fighting, scaling logs, operating a saw mill, operating power saws, and identifying trees.

08/21/1969 – Several boys won a series of elimination matches at the Kittanning Country Club earlier this month, including: Mike Buzzinotti, first flight champion; Paul Bradigan, runner-up; Robert Davis, second flight champion; and David Opalka, runner-up. The winners of the girls’ division were Ann Bower, champion and Nancy Wolk, runner-up.

08/21/1969 – The Vatican is drawing the hemline on mini-skirts of girls visiting St. Peter’s Basilica. They will bar from the church girls whose mini-skirts are too mini. Signs posted warn visitors that they must be dressed decently.

08/21/1964 – Grand champion of the second annual Armstrong County Black and White Show - at the Dayton Fair - is a cow in the two-year-old class, owned by Donna Schrecengost of Dayton RD 2.

08/21/1964 – Residents began arriving at the new Presbyterian Home for the Aging at Kittanning this week, and the home is expected to be filled to capacity of 24 by the end of September.

08/21/1959 - Armstrong County’s first all-electric home will open for public inspection tomorrow. Known as the Medallion Hilco “LaSalle,” the three-bedroom, ranch style house is located in the Country Club Estates off Freeport Road.

08/21/1959 – Kittanning Firemen’s Band and local firemen captured first prize last night in the Clarion firemen’s parade. The first place award in the senior band division was the ninth in nine competitions this season for the Kittanning musical organization. Kittanning firemen were judged the best firemen’s marching unit in the parade. Chief judge Robert Fair said the local band received the highest score ever given any band by the All-state Judges Association. The point-score of the Kittanning unit was 98.

08/21/1954 – The only son of St. Francis de Paul Church in Ford City who was ever ordained a priest, the Rev. Ladislas Szymanski is substituting now for Rev. Francis S. Lizik, church pastor, who is on vacation.

08/21/1954 – Two McGrann fishing enthusiasts, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schrecengost, escaped unharmed when their boat capsized in churning water at the base of the Allegheny River dam here.

08/21/1939 – Struck by an automobile while returning home from a visit with a neighbor, 55-year-old Harry Lobaugh of Freeport suffered injuries that resulted in his death in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights.

08/21/1939 – The State Highways Department is expected to start work soon after Labor Day on widening of Butler Road in Worthington, and resurfacing of the highway from that borough to the Butler County line.

08/21/1934 - The laying of new flooring in two downstairs rooms of Applewold school building has been completed. The repairs are being speeded so that the building will be ready for the opening of school within the next few weeks.

08/21/1934 - Tickets are on sale for a Leader-Times tour of the Chicago World’s Fair. From all indications a large party of Armstrong County residents will take the trip.

08/21/1929 - Percy Knappenberger, 17, of Kittanning RD 5, is in the hospital here suffering from injuries received in an automobile accident on the Kittanning-Freeport Road
