Penn State Extension To Offer Shiitake Mushroom Growers School

Shiitake mushrooms are grown for their perceived medicinal value as well as taste.

Shiitake mushrooms are all the rage with nutrition-minded individuals today. They are one of the most popular mushrooms worldwide, touted for their rich, savory taste and diverse health benefits. Compounds in shiitake are said to have medicinal benefits, and may help fight cancer, boost immunity, and support heart health.

This hands-on school offered by Penn State Extension will cover the primary information needed to grow Shiitake mushrooms on natural logs.

This event is on Monday, October 7th, from 9am-12pm. The address of the event is: Allegheny County North Park Ice Skating Rink – Second Floor, 1200 Pearce Mill Road. in Wexford, PA.

Topics include Mushroom 101, Tree Selection, Log Inoculation, Stacking/Fruiting, and Marketing/Business Planning.

Each participant will get to take home one inoculated log. Please bring a pair of outdoor work gloves for use during the hands-on process.
