Volunteers from all three downtown Kittanning fire departments responded late Sunday afternoon to a fire on the third floor of a duplex at 203 Maple Street.

The fire broke out shortly before 5PM when a stuffed chair ignited, filling the third floor with smoke. The cause of fire was not determined, although there were concerns that a small space heater may have contributed to the incident.

Hose Company #4 Fire Chief “Buzz” Kline said the fire was contained mostly to the chair and damage will probably be less than $5,000.

The duplex, owned by Kevin Flanders, was rented by Mary Serene. All three occupants in the duplex and on the other half of the duplex exited safely.

In addition to Kittanning Hose companies, there was assistance by Rayburn Township and West Kittanning fire departments. The Kittanning Police and Kittanning Hose Company #6 Ambulance were also on scene.

The units were released from the incident at 6PM.
