10/21/1969 - The youth of Armstrong County see little to attract them in the future, according to a report of the Armstrong Committee on Children and Youth. That report made to Harrisburg at the request of the governor came from a group of high school students from all over the county. “The main feeling of the youth about this county is one of staying the same,” the report said. “Many of the students do not plan on returning, because they believe the county offers no opportunities or advancement.”
10/21/1969 - First property owner to sell his holdings to the Armstrong County Redevelopment Authority for Kittanning’s first urban renewal project at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital signed an option with the authority yesterday. John Lindeman has agreed to sell his property at 260 and 262 South Jefferson St. and signed a 120-day option. The authority plans to buy 49 properties in the renewal area.
10/21/1969 – Thomas Montebell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Hugo Montebell of Kittanning was selected as “Boy of the Month” at the latest meeting of the Kittanning Rotary Club. Montebell is a senior letterman on both the football and wrestling teams. He holds the 1969 section and district wrestling titles. Scholastically, he is eighth in his class of 302 students, a member of the National Honor Society. He plans to become an ophthalmologist.
10/21/1969 – Jack Atwood, son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Atwood, Kittanning, has been promoted to the auditing department of Southland Corporation, 7-11 Food Stores in the Miami, Florida district. He has worked as a store manager for three years. He is a 1957 graduate of Kittanning High School and was a member of St. Marys Church. He and his wife, Judy (Greenawalt), have four children.

10/21/1969 – Two “Cats” helped lead Kittanning High to 7-2 and 5-3-1 seasons in 1965-66. Brad Houser (left) has gone on to stardom with Darmouth in the Ivy League while Dick Greenbaum (right) is a standout halfback with Allegheny College’s defending champs in the Presidents Athletic Conference in Pennsylvania. Houser, a quarterback at Kittanning, had a career mark of 190 completed passes out of 400 throws, 24 TD passes, kicked 14 PATs, and gained 2,99 air yards. Oddly, the ex-Cats had their biggest day against Knock High on October 31, 1966, when Houser fired 6 TD bombs and Greenbaum scored 5 TDs in a 53-13 win. Dartmouth shifted Houser to halfback and he ran so well against Holy Cross that the Boston Globe dubbed him “Darmouth’s O. J.” Both are hoping Kittanning’s 1969 team completes Year of the Cat sweep.
10/21/1969 – As the General Election nears, the Republicans have 19,957 registered voters while the Democrats have 14,680 in Armstrong County.
10/21/1964 - The state Highways Department yesterday conducted a tour of road projects completed in Armstrong County during 1964 - some paving is still in progress - at a total cost of about $800,000.
10/21/1959 - Turkey growers from all over Pennsylvania were guests of Alex, Karl and Oren Claypoole on their Worthington area farms. The Claypooles, who annually raise about 20,000 turkeys, are among the state’s pioneer turkey growers.

10/21/1944 - H. C. Snyder of Kittanning, owner of Snyder’s Implement Store, was elected a director of Pennsylvania Farm Equipment Dealers Association at a convention in Altoona.
