8/23/1963 – The Armstrong County School Board last night took the first step in reorganizing the school districts in the southern part of the county. Freeport and Leechburg expressed the desire to remain as individual districts while Apollo and Elders Ridge agreed to merge, thus proposing three separate districts.

8/23/1968 – The sign above the door at 240 Market Street remains Hart’s, but the type of merchandise inside has changed. For many years, Hart’s sold home furnishings, but now they are opening up a store to sell men and boys clothing. Hart’s moved its home furnishings business to a new building at 132 Market Street. The new store will be known as Hart’s Men’s and Boys’ Shop.

8/23/1968 – Four children stood in front of Grossman’s Food Store, 406-7th Street, Ford City with signs that said “We want Stella to stay.” Mrs. Stella Grossman stood on the steps watching the youngsters. Mr. & Mrs. Harry Grossman are closing the business after 23 years due to health. The youngsters were Christine Chimka, Susan Hanulik, Debbie Hanulik, and Judy Rodgers. It was a popular store for children to buy candy.

8//23/1968 – Slate Lick downed Tarrtown 10-2 and Allegheny Township battled Worthingto to a 5-5 tie in the opening round of the Tri-County Baseball League post season Shaughnessy playoffs.

8/23/1958 – Dr. Waldo Sweet is endeavoring to cross the state and arrive at Pelhan Manor, NY, in 8 days. This may not sound too difficult, but Dr. Sweet is doing it on a bicycle. When the professor arrived at Crooked Creek at about 1:30 pm yesterday, it marked his first full day on the road.

8/23/1958 - Ford City- Ford City Borough Council in a special session established a tentative schedule of water rates to the Manor Twp. Authority, and also broadened powers of the Ford City Municipal Borough Authority. The councilmen arrived at a figure of treating water furnished by Manor Twp. Water Authority of 23c a thousand gallon.

8/23/1958 - Leo Haky, 8-letterman at Shannock Valley HS, will enter Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, VA this autumn.

8/23/1948 - Military funeral services for Pfc. Howard J. Good, repatriated soldier, were held in the Nu Mine Presbyterian Church.

8/23/1948 - Ford City- Damage in the amount of $500 was caused this morning about 4 am when fire occurred in the kitchen of Kovey’s Tavern, at the corner of 5th Ave. and 9th St.

8/23/1943 - “No gas” signs were displayed at numerous gasoline service stations in the Kittanning district over the weekend. Indications are that the situation will become progressively worse for the remainder of the month.

8/23/1943 - Citizens of Worthington and West Franklin Twp., numbering about 800 people, gathered on the lawn of the Worthington-West Franklin School and dedicated a service roll honoring 182 men and women from the district who are in some branch of the nation’s armed forces.

8/23/1938 - Fire, believed to be caused by an explosion of an oil stove, brought death to a mother and her 4 small children trapped in a tiny 4 room frame house in North Buffalo Twp. A one-year-old baby boy, believed to be dropped from a 2nd story window or carried out by his mother before she died, was found in the underbrush. The victims- Mrs. Emma Bowser, about 35, wife of Herman Bowser and mother of the 4 fire victims- Mary Louise, 8, Douglas, 7, Doris, 6, and Jean, 4.

8/23/1938 - The Cadogan Union Protestant Church, destroyed by a fire on 14 April and rebuilt only recently, was rededicated Sunday with ceremonies that marked a triple service program.

8/23/1933 - The body of Meade Wolff, a 31 year old Adrian man, was found Wednesday morning about 150 ft. from the Baltimore and Ohio railway station in Adrian. Death was caused when Wolff was struck by a train sometime Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

8/23/1933 - Remodeling of the Presbyterian manse for library purposes is well underway.

8/23/1928 - Slight hope is held for the rescue of Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer of Parkers Landing whose plane is lost somewhere between Ontario and Greenland.

8/23/1928 - Citizens of Worthington are shaping plans for the grand opening of their community park on Labor Day.
