The quest for an undefeated conference record will have to wait a few more days for the West Shamokin High School varsity girls’ volleyball team.
Armstrong County Republican Committee Chair and Indiana Armstrong Patriots founder Tom Smith died Saturday at his home in Shelocta.
Smith, 67, was also father to Indiana High School volleyball coach Malinda Oesterling. West Shamokin was slated to play Indiana High School tonight.
West Shamokin Coach Dan Spencer said that the matches scheduled for tonight in Indiana have been rescheduled for Thursday, October 22 due to the funeral schedule.
The family will receive friends at the Smith Complex in Shelocta from 2-4 and 7-9 PM today before funeral services tomorrow at Mt. Union Lutheran Church.
Coach Spencer said he will attend funeral events today and expects many of his players to do the same since they are all part of the Armstrong Indiana Volleyball Association.
“Malinda and I go back a long ways. Malinda was a student of mine in high school and I coached her, and we’ve run the club together for many, many years so, what is a tough situation for her is also tough for me,” Coach Spencer said.
“We always practiced at Smith Gym, and Tom was always a great supporter of ours.”
Junior varsity girls begin play at 6PM, with the undefeated varsity team following. The varsity team was already crowned section champions.
Coach Spencer anticipated that Smith’s passing will be in the back of players’ minds Thursday evening.
