For the second consecutive year, central Armstrong County can crown about two dozen Kittanning-area boys as youth football champions.
October 17, the Armstrong Redskins defended their Allegheny Youth Football League title at David “Red” Ullom Field in Kittanning with a 14-6 win versus Lower Burrell Recruits.
Third-year Head Coach Ed Totin said the eight-and-under age group scored more than 300 points since August, but nearly 20 players scored points.
“Our team was very, very strong this year,” Coach Totin said. “We preached team –we don’t preach individualism. There’s no selfishness on our team.
When they celebrate, they celebrate as a team. When they score, they score as a team.”
Coach Totin (who started with the league when his son, Ethan, became involved) also praised Armstrong River Hawks Head Coach Frank Fabian for inspiring the youth team during Friday’s 51-14 Senior Night victory. The youth players warmed-up, participated in pre-game activities and ran out onto the field with the varsity team.
“Truly, Coach Fabian is a class act. It was really an impressionable time for those little guys,” Coach Totin said. “(Coach Fabian) really reached out.”
The Redskins (who have the outdoor field next to the West Kittanning fire hall as their home field) played in their third consecutive championship and finished their season 9-0.
Last year, Armstrong beat the Freeport Bees 14-6 but lost to Freeport in 2013.
The youth football league also held title championships with two other age groups, but the Armstrong Braves or Armstrong Warriors did not make it to the final game.
