A total of 60 nonprofits will ask for community support during tomorrow’ day-long “Day of Giving” and Armstrong County Commissioners also pledged Marcellus Shale Legacy Fund dollars to the cause.

A total of $5,000 from the Marcellus Shale Legacy Fund will be donated toward the Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center in Manor Township (via the Armstrong Educational Trust) and $1,000 to the Arts on the Allegheny.

Marcellus Shale Coordinator Carly Cowan said both donations are in coordination with tomorrow’s Community Foundation-coordinated event, which will match donations to a certain percentage.

“While we have this opportunity, that’s take advantage of it in order to maximize the donations to those organizations,” Cowan said. “They can surely use it. They’re definitely good uses of the funds.”

It was the first Legacy Fund donation to Arts on the Allegheny.

Last year, commissioners also allocated $16,120 out of the county’s Marcellus Shale Legacy Fund for a retaining wall along North McKean Way as part of the Downtown Kittanning Revitalization Project, among money donated to other nonprofits.

About $60,000 in legacy fund dollars were received in 2014 and about the same amount is anticipated by the end of June 2015.

The remainder of the money has yet to be allocated, but Cowan said commissioners are dedicated to making the best use of the funds.

Nearly 40 Armstrong County non-profits were part of the “Day of Giving” last year.

Donations may be made at the Community Foundation Serving the Heart of Western Pennsylvania office, 220 South Jefferson St. in Kittanning, or online at www.armstronggives.org.

Donations may also be mailed to the foundation’s offices, but must be postmarked with tomorrow’s date to count toward the annual event.
