OBIT: Winifred Ruth Barr Ellsworth (born in Clymer)

Winifred Ruth Barr Ellsworth, 98, of Key Largo, Florida, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Winifred and her twin brother, Carleton Vernon Barr, were born June 22, 1915 in Clymer, Indiana County, to parents Nellie May Hancock and Carleton Van Horn Barr.

Winifred attended elementary and high school in Indiana, Pa. After graduating from Indiana State Teachers College, she married Lee S. Ellsworth at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland, Kentucky on June 5, 1941. Lee was also a graduate from Indiana College. They moved to Pittsburgh for a few years while he was a lieutenant and pilot in the Army Air Corp at the end of World War II.

After Lee returned from the war efforts, they moved to Murrysville, Pa. and raised their family of four. Lee was Superintendent for the Franklin Township School System and Winifred “Freddie” gave piano lessons at home, played bridge, took wonderful care of her family and was a member of the Eastern Star.

After the children were grown, Freddie & Lee moved to Waynesboro and Washington, PA and Struthers, Ohio. Freddie taught elementary music and conducted the elementary orchestra around Liberty, Ohio and Eastern Pennsylvania.

In retirement, Lee and Freddie enjoyed fishing, boating and square dancing in Key Largo, Florida. During the summer, they would stay next door to their eldest daughter in Atlanta, Georgia.
After 66 years of the most wonderful loving marriage between a husband and wife, Lee passed away on Sept. 28, 2007. Freddie continued to travel between Atlanta, Ohio, Maryland and Key Largo.

Winifred is survived by four children: Cheryl D’Amato, Kathy May, Cynthia Yelkin and Carleton Ellsworth; eight grandchildren: Wil and Noelle D’Amato, Carleton and Leah Ellsworth and Cemal, Alisa, Kera and Sedat Lee Yelkin; and six great grandchildren: Zoe and Liam D’Amato, Marshall Yelkin, Paul Ellsworth and twins Aria Elizabeth and Ella Grace Ellsworth.

Winifred did not want a funeral so the family will gather for her burial at Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, in Kittanning tomorrow - Saturday, November 30, 2013 -at 1PM with family and friends. Pastor Todd Marino will officiate.

Arrangements are entrusted to Carson/Boyer Funeral Home in Rural Valley.

A memorial celebration of the lives of both Lee and Winifred will be held during the June 21-22, 2014 weekend in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Winifred is remembered as a beautiful mother and wife, a strong supporter of women’s rights, a special caring friend and a lover of music.
