Historical Headlines - November 1

11/01/1969 - The Worthington Halloween Parade was beginning last night when the fire whistle blew - taking firemen and the ambulance out of the parade. Firemen raced to the firehall, then to a small building by the Buffalo Valley ballpark at 8:12 p.m. The shed had burned by the time firemen arrived. The whole call took 25 minutes, said fire Chief Harry Bowser. It was the first time in 21 years the parade has taken place when a fire call has disrupted activities, parade chairman L. E. Hoyt said.

11/01/1969 – Kittanning Wildcats won the annual football battle over the Ford City Sabers, 26-6. Bruce Decock, 205-pound senior full back led Kittanning in scoring with two touchdowns. Senior wingback Tim Rupert and Right End Mike Lattanzio scored one touchdown each. Rupert kicked two extra points.

11/01/1969 - Kittanning Schools Take Academic Game Honors.

11/01/1969 – Karen Hooks, 15, from Kittanning RD3 was listed in guarded condition at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, where she is being treated for a head injury in a two-car smashup last night. Two other teens – Donald Lane, 16, of Orr Ave, Kittanning, and Sheree Transue, 14, also of Orr Ave, were listed in satisfactory condition at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Harold Slagle, 16, of Woodward Avenue, was treated in emergency room and released. A car driven by John McCanna, 17, of Kittanning RD2 was traveling south of North Water Street and collided with Lane’s car. McCanna will be charged with running a stop sign and driving too fast for conditions.

11/01/1969 - Former County Sheriff Tom Hutchison died this morning at the hospital where he had been a patient for the last two weeks. He was 60 years old and lived on Reynolds Avenue. His father, Charles Hutchison, was the chief of police in Ford City.

11/01/1954 - One of the featured novelty acts which appeared in Worthington’s annual Halloween parade was an 1880 model high-wheel bike. Owned and loaned for the occasion by Mr. Morrison of the Morrison Candy Company of Butler, it was ridden by 17-year-old James Claypool of Worthington.

11/01/1949 - The Apollo Steel mill closed because of obsolescence, will reopen next week. The reopening is attributed to a big demand for steel, resulting from a strike of CIO United Steelworkers.

11/01/1944 - Pvt. Harry Rumbarger, 22-year-old Kittanning soldier with more than two years’ military service, is missing in action in Italy.

11/01/1944 - The congregation of First Methodist Church will honor the Rev. R. B. and Mrs. Callahan at a reception Friday night. They came to Kittanning three weeks ago from New Brighton, where Mr. Callahan was pastor of the Fifth Avenue Church.

11/01/1939 - The community play center, sponsored by WPA’s Division of Education and Recreation as a phase of the Youth Recreational Council program, completed its second week with the unique record of a total outlay of 85 cents.

11/01/1939 - Two additional bottling lines, requiring another 100 workers, have been placed in operation at the Schenley plant of Jpseph S. Finch Company. Thomas J. McConnville is superintendent of the big distillery.

11/01/1934 - Issuance of hunting licenses to Armstrong County sportsmen ran over the 6,000 mark late yesterday. Clerks in the Armstrong County treasurer’s office were forced to order additional licenses Wednesday afternoon, from the Department of Revenue.

11/01/1934 - There were 14 persons patients today in Kittanning General Hospital.

11/01/1934 - Mrs. Della Parker, deputy Armstrong County treasurer, died this afternoon after a heart attack in the treasurer’s office at the courthouse.

11/01/1929 - With the issuance of 940 hunters’ licenses yesterday at the office of Armstrong County Treasurer Harry B. Rearick, all previous records for one day’s business were broken.

11/01/1929 - Rumors are current in Ford City that Plant No. 5 of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company will be used to house the Charleroi plant, which will be moved here. The No. 5 plant has been idle for some time.
