TESH: Pets Feel Sad When Kids Go to College

You’ve probably heard of empty-nest syndrome, but it’s not just moms and dads who sometimes feel sad when kids go away to school. Our pets can also get the blues! Some dogs get depressed when kids go back to school in the fall or off to college for the first time, especially if they’ve spent a lot of time together during the summer. Cats can also get distressed when their normal routine is interrupted! Our pets have an expectation of something predictable. When that doesn’t happen, they can get distraught and meow more than usual, or get lethargic and sleep longer. So what’s the cure for depressed dogs and cats? For dogs, a lot of exercise can help. It’ll release endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in the brain. Yes - dogs have them too! It’s also important to remember that your dog is sensitive to your emotional state. If you’re depressed about your child going away to college, your dog will pick up on that. Getting out and walking your dog will be good therapy for both of you. Another good idea is to have the child who’s going away leave behind a worn piece of clothing, like a T-shirt. Having the scent of their favorite person around will help your dog relax and it sometimes works for cats as well. Another thing to help cats is to have a different family member take over the routine, feeding them and playing with them, and letting the cat sleep in their room. Ultimately, just like with humans, the best remedy is time. Your pet is sure to perk up if they get lots of love and attention no matter who’s giving it. Aww…give some extra love for fur babies, and you’ll have happy pets sitting with you as you listen tonight to The John Tesh Radio Show on WTYM AM 1380 and FM 103.7.
