10/4/1968 – Two groups were criticized for their stand on the school building program at the Armstrong County Taxpayers League members met last night at the Glassworkers Union Hall in Ford City. Members discussed the positions of the Kittanning Ministerial Association and the area Chamber of Commerce on the building program. Both have endorsed proposals to establish two senior high schools in the Armstrong School District.

10/4/1968 – Remote dictation by telephone into improved take recording machines may be the solution to the global shortage of secretaries. They are in such demand and so expensive that it has made the problem unsolvable for some companies.

10/4/1963 – Miss Genevieve Blatt, an East Brady graduate, and the first woman to be elected to state office was in Kittanning last night to conduct a “Coffee and Question” session with Armstrong County democratic women. (MORE: She is known as the “first lady” of Pennsylvania politics, was the first woman elected to a statewide political office in PA, and became the first woman to sit as a Pennsylvania appellate judge. As a solicitor for the City of Pittsburgh, she drafted the first smokestack ordinance to protect the environment. While judge of Commonwealth Court (1971-1993), Blatt ruled that high school sports teams in PA could no longer discriminate on the basis of gender. As a Catholic, she received three medals from popes in recognition of her work with church and society.)

10/4/1958 - Last night the Wildcats rubbed out a Vandergrift powerhouse 27-6. The game was clinched with 2 first half touchdowns by Skinner and Milliron.

10/4/1958 - Rev. Walter Kennedy, pastor of the Templeton and Goheenville Presbyterian Churches, is listed in “fair” condition at Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital today. The well known long time preacher was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning.

10/4/1943 - Mrs. Jean Cross of Hawthorne Ave. today was credited with saving the life of a 17 month old wee one when she risked her own life to snatch the child from the path of an approaching passenger train. The child’s name is, coincidentally, Ralpha Jean Martillotti.

10/4/1943 - Flo Patch, famous pacing mare and the last surviving daughter of Dan Patch, world’s champion pacing horse, was buried this morning on the Crum farm near Cowansville.

10/4/1938 - Young Republican ones of Kittanning- all under 35 years of age- will meet Thursday night in headquarters on Market St. to elect a chairman and officers, and to effect full organization.

10/4/1938 - American engineers at Pittsburgh will open bids next Monday for 2 gasoline electric standby generating units, one each for use at the Crooked Creek and Tionesta flood control dams.

10/4/1933 - Charles V. Dery and John F. Dery, former Port Henry, NY theatre operators, will take over management of the Columbia and State Theatres here 9 Oct. The deal by which they acquired the lease of 2 local theatres was consummated last night.

10/4/1928- The funeral of Josephus Bowser, who was killed at the Chestnut Street crossing of the Pennsylvania railway Tuesday afternoon, will be held at the home of Mrs. Marlin Bowser of Manor Township.
