9/17/1968 – Applewold and West Kittanning have agreed to discontinue the discharge of sewage into the Allegheny River and to take immediate steps for the construction of a sewage treatment plant.

9/17/1968 – Directors of Armstrong County Memorial Hospital met with state officials to discuss details involved with purchase of the local hospital on South McKean Street in Kittanning by the department of public welfare, for use as a regional geriatric hospital.

9/17/1968 – Demolition started on an old mansion in the 500 block of 3rd Avenue in Ford City, which had recently served as office and meeting rooms for PPG Industries. The building, adjacent to Works 4, PPG Industries main office, will be removed and the area used as a car parking lot. It was built in the early 1890’s. It was the first mansion constructed after Captain John B. Ford established the plate glass plant in Ford City in 1887.

9/17/1968 – Ford City firemen received their new pumper yesterday which will replace the 21-year-old 1947 model pumper. It is sold to a fire company south of Pittsburgh. The new vehicle costs $32,000 and the truck manufacturer is allowing a $5,000 trade-in allowance for the old pumper. The new pumper is an open cab capable of pumping 1,000 gallons of water per minute. It has a 300-gallon tank, ladders, 1,800 feet of hose, and a portable light plant.

9/17/1963 - Former Kittanning resident, James C. Mullins, 32, has been appointed writer-producer of Westinghouse Newsfilms, a division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh.

9/17/1958 - Newly organized Kittanning Municipal Authority interviewed 3 Pittsburgh firms in process of selecting a financial advisor and investment broker to handle the authority bond issue for Kittanning’s proposed sewage disposal system.

9/17/1958 - Ford City- “The Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. has voluntarily entered into an agreement with Manor Authority to loan it up to $25000 without interest over a 5 year period beginning in 1959,” Authority Chairman Charles Cusick said today.

9/17/1958 - John Morgan Davis, candidate for lieutenant governor, told a gathering of Democrat ones in Kittanning that “we must not relax; if this state is worth winning , it is worth winning by a large Democratic majority.”

9/17/1943 - A.H. Williamson, timber controller for Canada, predicted today that future reduction in newsprint production was “inevitable” because of acute manpower shortage in the Canadian forests.

9/17/1938 - The Rev. T.M. Gladden of Bakerstown, newly appointed pastor of the Methodist Protestant Church in Kittanning, will deliver his first sermon at the 11am service Sunday in the church. He succeeds the Rev. George Budd.

9/17/1938 - A wailing fire siren aroused Leechburg in the early hours, Saturday morning, to knowledge that community tragedy- in form of a fire truck upset- had brought death to E.C. Haven, 60, oldest active firemen, critical injury to 2, hospitalization to 6 more ones and lesser hurts to 4 other members of the volunteer company.

9/17/1938 - A spirited but light Brookville HS gridiron outfit fought Kittanning’s Wildcats to a standstill for 3 quarters of a football game here, only to fall behind 18-6 as Greno Buzzinotti scored 2 4th quarter touchdowns.

9/17/1928 - Forest E. Moore, formerly of Kittanning Buick Company, has opened a general repair shop along the Kittanning-New Bethlehem road at Distant.

9/17/1928 - The Leader Times announced the resignation for health reasons of Miss Allene Milliron, who capably served as a member of reportorial staff for more than a year. Mrs. Russell McGregor will take Miss Milliron’s place on the Leader Times staff.
