After losing against the River Hawks in Armstrong’s championship round of their Tip-Off Tournament the West Shamokin Wolves (3-1) girls varsity basketball team has rattled off two straight wins - including their first Heritage Conference win against Blairsville (3-1) Thursday night by a final score of 46-40.

This was West Shamokin’s first game against a Heritage Conference opponent, and they sure didn’t get the luck of the draw. Blairsville is favored by nearly everyone to win the Heritage Conference, rightly so as they have won the Heritage Conference four times, but that didn’t deter West Shamokin from making a statement in their new conference.

After the game West Shamokin Head Coach Frank Nagy was happy with his first win against a Heritage Conference opponent.

“That’s a big win to open up the Heritage, not only did we not lose, but Blairsville has lost twice in the past three years at home, they just don’t lose at home and they usually don’t lose in Heritage (conference) play.,” Nagy said.

It was a historic night for West Shamokin senior Katie Glover as she not only posted her second straight 20 rebound game, but she also set a school record for rebounds with 24 against Blairsville, and according to Nagy the Wolves rebounding edge was the difference in the win.

“The boards won the game, Katie (Glover) had 24 rebounds, a school record – we pounded the boards. We did a nice job defensively forcing them into usually a contested shot and then more often than not we got that rebound,” Nagy said.

Just because the Wolves made a statement to the rest of the conference Thursday night doesn’t mean they should rest easy according to Nagy.

“I told the girls after the game that this win tonight gives us nothing on Tuesday against Penns Manor. They know we have a good team and Penns Manor is going to come out ready to play and this win (against Blairsville) gives us no points Tuesday, it’s 0-0 to start the game and we have to give the same effort we gave (at Blairsville),” Nagy said.

Tip-Off against Penns Manor is set for 7:30 PM on Tuesday night at West Shamokin High School.
