A local restaurant owner announced that she will be going out of business on December 31st.

Mimi Carney, owner of Myrt’s Route 66 Café in Bethel Township made the announcement during a live radio show held at the restaurant on November 18.

“Myrt’s is closing,” she said with tears in her eyes. “We are in negotiations with some very interested parties in hope of making a smooth transition. It’s just a personal decision for me to be able to spend more time with my family. The Johns and Carney family will be leaving Myrt’s at the end of the year.”

Mimi said the building started out in the 1950s as an ice cream stand.

The restaurant was started by her mother, Georggie 25 years ago. It was named after her mother, Myrt.

“She was a great cook and taught us about hospitality and the love of food and entertaining,” Mimi said. “Grandma Myrt was gone by the time we opened the restaurant.”

When Georggie retired, Mimi decided to continue the family tradition.

“I did a lot of traveling over the years in my previous jobs,” Mimi said. “I worked for a food manufacturer for 22 years and that required a lot of travel. Then I worked for a food distributor selling to restaurants and traveled locally. I was ready to just go to one place every day, and that place happened to be Myrts. My Mom was making the decision to close Myrt’s three-and-a-half years ago and I decided to run the restaurant.”

Mimi has enjoyed the restaurant business.

“It’s been great! It was something I thought about and wanted to do for a really long time. I love it, but I’m ready to do something different now. I’m probably going to cry a million tears before the end of the year, because I really do love it.”

Myrt’s catered to its local clientele - making special concoctions to a customer’s request.

“We have some great favorites that have been named after customers that have ordered something special long enough that we decided to put it on the menu. We have prided ourselves in homemade cooking. We buy fresh local burger from a local farmer, bread everything here, and our fresh cut home fries. We go through 500 pounds of fresh potatoes every week.”

Above all, Mimi said she will miss her customers.

“We have been known to call customers at home if they haven’t been here for a couple of days, or even go to their home and make sure they are okay.”

The restaurant will be open 5AM-2PM Thursdays through Sundays until December 31.

Very sorry to hear this. No one in the family willing to carry it on? A new owner means a mortgage and increased prices in an, as yet, tough economy. Not a good recipe.
