Ford City Borough Council unanimously agreed, 5-0, to spend Fire Tax Fund money for emergency equipment.
Fire Chief Ron Wojcik asked for elected officials to spend about $13,800 for 30 new emergency pagers for volunteer firefighters.
“The ones we have now are just breaking down, and it would cost more to repair them than what they’re worth,” Chief Wojcik said. “These ones, I believe, are like seven years old and were low-budget pagers.”
Chief Wojcik received bids from three area businesses, but recommended purchasing the pagers through Terry’s Electronics in Distant. As he explained to Council President Carol Fenyes, Terry’s Electronics will program the pagers personally at no additional cost.
“He’ll give us good service,” Chief Wojcik added. “Everybody that has these is really pleased with them and they seem to be holding up.”
Fenyes said the other two bidders would have charged in excess of $300 for programming.
The new pagers come with an extended five-year warranty.
Ford City Fire Relief Association Secretary Ted Breuer indicated during discussion in October that volunteer firefighters previously had replaced their emergency pagers three times, without Borough reimbursement.
