The Armstrong River Hawks varsity volleyball team has made quite a statement since forming, winning back-to-back section championships (co-champion with Oakland Catholic this season).

Wednesday night they made another statement defeating the Shaler Area Titans in three staright sets - 25-22, 25-18, and 25-11.

After a back and forth first set the River Hawks settled in and began showing why they are back-to-back section champions.

Abbey DiGregorio who finished the match with 42 assists explained why the River Hawks sometimes start out slow and how they are able to turn it around so quickly.

“I think we all know what we have to do out there so we just do it. We realize that we’re messing up and then we snap back, but we always start out slow and then we realize we have to pick (our game) up,” DiGregorio said.

Kenzie Lasher finished the match with a team high 10 digs and 13 kills. Hannah Bowman finished with 8 kills.

Now that the first match of the playoffs is out of the way the River Hawks will have to prepare for the winner of Plum vs. Hempfield. The River Hawks have played both teams and senior Ali Bowers believe that if the team plays well they should continue to advance in the playoffs.

“We played both of them and Hempfield we had a little trouble with, but I think we can take them. Plum we had played them in section (this season) and they’re a pretty good team too, but if we are on our game we can beat them,” Bowers said.

The River Hawks will take on the winner of Plum vs. Hempfield on Tuesday November 1 at a time and location yet to be decided.
