It was a big day for senior Bret Lundgren at West Shamokin High School as KDKA’s Bob Pompeani visited the school to hand out the upcoming Allegheny Health Network Extra Effort Award.
According to CBS Pittsburgh’s website the Extra Effort Award is given to students who “ excel, not only in the classroom — but on the field or court and in the community with the Allegheny Health Network Extra Effort Award!”
This week the recipient of the award was Bret Lundgren. Leading into the assembly where Bret was honored he said that there was a lot of excitement and mixed emotions.
“(I had) a bunch of mixed emotions. You can be nervous, but there was definitely a lot of excitement knowing that all the work pays off at the end and people do see that and recognize that. That’s definitely very gratifying and I am just thankful and greatful,” Bret said.
Bret is a three sport athlete who plays basketball, golf, and volleyball. On top of being a three sport athlete Bret also works at the YMCA in Kittanning as a life guard and swim instructor along with all of the work he does for the community.
Bret went on to explain what it took to win this the Extra Effort Award.
“I play three sports – basketball, volleyball, and golf. I am maintaining a good academic record, I take as many AP classes as I can because I like to fill my schedule. Right now I have five AP classes and three independent studies. Also having a job and helping out the community however you can. Especially when we go out with the basketball team and we have a community service day. There’s a lot of different things that go into it (winning the award).”
Bret is a bit modest when he says he has a ‘good academic record’. His GPA is above a 4.3 and what he wants to do next in life is even more impressive.
“(My plan is to) hopefully attend Penn State Main Campus for bio-medical engineering with a minor in physics, that’s the goal right now.”
You can catch all the action from last night next Thursday at 6:45 PM on KDKA.
