Both the Armstrong 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams were both able to pick up wins yesterday in a double header against Seneca Valley as they move toward the mid-way point of the season.
The 8th grade girls were up first and they put on quite a defensive showing. The River Hawks only allowed 11 points to Seneca Valley, including the 2nd quarter where Armstrong held Seneca Valley to zero points to finish the half up 26-24.
One player who seemed to be all over the floor for the River Hawks was their guard, Shaelyn Clark. Clark finished the game with 27 points and made 5/6 foul shots. Clark also displayed very active hands poking the ball free from Seneca Valley ball handlers all game adding a bunch of steals to her box score.
River Hawks 8th grade and varsity girl’s basketball Head Coach Kirk Lorigan had this to say about Shaelyn’s effort.
“Shay is a real good player, she plays 12 months out of the year. She’s so quick and she finishes at the basket and she has played her heart out for us this year and it’s evident in the results.”
The 8th grade team would go on to beat Seneca Valley by the final score of 51-11, and Lorigan said his teams defense has been big all season.
“We work defensively. We work on defense and rebound a lot because that’s what is going to keep you in games. You are going to have off nights shooting but ultimately we aren’t giving up a lot of points. I think this (game) was the second or third in a row that we have only given up 11. We’re pretty happy with our defensive effort and the rebounding we put out.”
The 7th Grade Girls Basketball team at Armstrong celebrates their latest win against Seneca Valley Monday as they won by a final score of 37-7.
The 7th grade team played right after the first game and they also put on a defensive show.
The 7th grade girls were able to defeat Seneca Valley 37-7, holding Seneca Valley to under 10 points. Head Coach Andy Miller went on to say explain the work that has gone into the season thus far.
“We started practice back in August and we have been in the gym now for about a month and a half and we still have two and a half weeks in the season and I have seen a lot of improvement in the girls. I hope they all continue to work hard and get better.” Miller said.
The girls will travel to Mars for their next game on September 28th as both teams hope to continue improving throughout the season.
