Arrows Face Off with XTreme This Weekend
by Jonathan Weaver
On the road to a national championship, the Armstrong Arrows U16 hockey team will face off against many opponents.
But, maybe none more elusive than the Ashburn XTreme – their opponent Saturday and Sunday at the Belmont Complex in East Franklin Township.
Coach Lee Grafton scheduled the independent game in July/August.
“(Ashburn) did not win a national title, but at the final rankings of the year, they were still ranked No. 1 in the nation for Tier II,” Coach Grafton said.
“Our team wants to play the highest level of competition we can – that’s the only way you improve.”
Team Captain Gio Romeo said the team is “extremely ready and excited” for this weekend.
“We are definitely going to bring our ‘A’ game,” Romeo said.
Winger Case Haberstroh said the Arrows can learn from Ashburn’s continuous work ethic.
“We just have to work hard and play as a team – just don’t stop,” Haberstroh said.
The U16 Arrows play the Xtreme at 6PM Saturday and 10:30AM Sunday, and the newly-formed U14 Arrows play the Xtreme at 4:30PM Saturday and 9AM Sunday.
Fundraising opportunities – such as for pucks and silent auctions for Pittsburgh Penguins NHL tickets - will also be available at this weekend’s game. All proceeds benefit the Armstrong Arrows U14 & U16 Program.
The U16 team played Ashburn in a New Jersey tournament last season, but lost.
