More than two dozen Lenape Tech students put their culinary skills to the test today with the opening of the school restaurant to the public and fellow teachers.

Culinary Instructor Andrea Fahlor said guests will notice a change this year, though.

“This year, we are trying something a little bit different – and it’s going to allow me to do a lot more teaching and the students to get a lot more lab practice,” Fahlor said. “Starting (today) until the end of December, we’re going to run a buffet every Thursday – so the students will get a lot of buffet prep, set up and get to see a lot of different items because the hot line buffet will change every week.

“The students are in charge of finding the recipes and deciding what is going to be on the menu that week.”

Among other items, today’s weekly buffet includes smothered chicken, Asian salmon and mashed potatoes.

Food preparation for today’s opening began yesterday, but other details were finalized during the first few weeks of the school year.

Full-time Carpentry Senior Chyeanne Traister, of West Kittanning, made 17 food name holders out of trees being clear-cut by Natural Resources students.

“They had some extra scraps lying around and said ‘Feel free,’ Traister said.

Traister received participation credit via her shop, as well as the opportunity to taste-test a fruit mousse dessert.

Senior Becky Fry (also from the Armstrong School District) is shop vice-president and has been cooking, serving and replenishing the buffet since she was a sophomore. She prefers to cook – preferably entrees.

Money generated by the restaurant goes back into the restaurant account to purchase food or replenish funds. Tips help for student trips or field trips.

During the course of the school year, Fahlor explained that students also will learn professionalism and team-building skills that can be useful on any career path.

When the student-run restaurant reopens after Winter Break, students will operate an a la carte menu Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Between Lenape Tech staff, guests and take-home meals, students prepared for a guest list of 80 people today from 11AM-1PM.

Meals were also prepared yesterday for cosmetology students – who opened their shop to the public yesterday.

So, for clarification, what are the days and hours where the public is welcome to dine at Lenape Tech from now until December break? Is it just the Thursday buffet?
