As soon as license plates are received, local fixed-route or shared-ride bus passengers might see some new wheels cruising down the road from Town and Country Transit.

Last week, officials received a pair of 2016 Ford Transits. Maintenance Foreman Harvey Smith is currently inspecting the vehicles.

General Manager Patti Lynn Baker said the Transits will replace vans, and are as tall as a cutaway, but narrower and contain rear wheelchair lifts as well as seats that can flip to accommodate handicapped passengers. The Transits can transport eight persons each.

“There are a lot of things we like about them,” Baker said.

In addition to the two that were received last week, four more Transits are expected in mid-September

Last night, employees underwent a training they haven’t received in at least more than 13 years.

All employees underwent fire extinguisher training last night at their headquarters with Kittanning Hose Company #6 Fire Chief Scott Kline.

The two dozen drivers and other employees did not have to undergo training due to insurance reasons, Baker clarified.

“I think we all need to be comfortable with handling a fire extinguisher and putting out a fire. I think it’s important we all know how to do that,” Baker said. “Whether we’re in an office where there’s a ton of paper or computer equipment or in a vehicle, that’s why we’re equipped with either fire suppression systems or extinguishers. You can have something sitting right there and if you’re not comfortable with it, it doesn’t do you much good.”

Employees were thought to be split into two groups by volunteer firefighters for the exercise
