Local Fire Department Trains New Members on Vehicle Rescue

New members of the East Franklin and Applewold fire departments used scrap vehicles from P. J. Greco in Tarrtown to practice rescue techniques on Sunday. In addition, cars were placed on their side and rescue workers had to pretend to extricate passengers by cutting off doors or removing windshields.

It was training time yesterday afternoon for four new members of the East Franklin and Applewold fire departments.

With assistance from the P. J. Greco scrap metal yard, the fire team practiced rescue techniques on five different scrap vehicles.

Fire Chief Mark Feeney said they replicated scenarios the responders would actually encounter in real life.

“We just spent all day on rescue, We set up some basic rescue scenarios and did hand tools throughout the morning for several hours. Then we switched over and did more advanced (techniques) putting the cars over on their side and did advanced rescue skills in extrication on vehicles on their side.”

The training for the new members started Thursday night and continued throughout this weekend.

“It gives them a hands-on training they need in a crash course over a three-day period.”

According to Feeney, two of the new members live in East Franklin Township, while the other two live in West Kittanning Borough.

“All four of the new guys are within a mile-and-a-half of the fire department.”

Feeney said the combined membership of East Franklin and Applewold is now 64 members. However, he added, they are always looking for more. Interested persons should contact any of the firemen.
