More than a month remains until All Hollow’s Eve, but a local community will be able to count down until Trick or Treating with a decorating contest.

The Ford City Garden Club will sponsor their second Harvest Home Scarecrow Contest this year

Garden Club President Dee Simmons suggested the free contest two years ago.

“I saw it in another town and thought, ‘Boy, this would be a great idea for Ford City,’” Simmons recalled.

Simmons said entries this year must reflect either a scene or an event, in good taste, and must be displayed in the front yard for all Garden Club members to judge.

“It can not reflect controversial, social, religious or political opinions,” Simmons said. “(Contestants) must have everything up by September 26.

“We take pictures of every single place and then we put them on a board and we all vote (before) we narrow it down.”

Cash prizes of $75, $50 & $25 will be awarded, along with as many as six People’s Choice awards.

Winners will be announced October 10.

Forms are available at the Ford City Public Library, online at the library’s website or on the garden club’s Facebook page.

In October 2013, Simmons reported 24 scarecrow entries – with Michael and Kim Gratteri, of Fourth Avenue, as the inaugural winners.

Flyers advertising the contest are also found in local businesses and invitations were sent to past participants.
