OBIT: John P. Zamperini (Butler)

John Paul Zamperini, 91, died Friday, August 14, 2015, at the Community Living Center at the Butler Veteran’s Administration.

Born and raised in Seminole, PA, he was the son of John and Lena Geoni Zamperini. He was a lifelong resident of Kittanning.

Mr. Zamperini was a veteran of WWII, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. He built the first fighter airstrip and B-29 strip in Saipan. He also built a B-25 airstrip in IE Shima. John received the Good Conduct medal, distinguished unit citation, and the Asiatic-Pacific campaign ribbon with two battle stars.

After serving with the U.S. Army, Mr. Zamperini worked at PPG Industries as well as coal mines. He also repaired television sets. He coached Kittanning Little League for several years. He enjoyed gardening, playing poker, and watching cartoons with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As an avid enthusiast, he participated and won many events at the Armstrong County Senior Games while in his 80s.

Mr. Zamperini was a long-time member of St. Marys Roman Catholic Church in Kittanning, where he served as an usher for many years.

He leaves his daughters: Barbara (Robert) Flick of Butler and Carol Niggel of Renfrew; his son: John (Lisa) Zamperini of Glenshaw; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister: Virginia Johns.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Josephine Zamperini.

Friends were received Sunday afternoon and evening at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home in Kittanning. Parting Prayers will be held at 9:30 AM Monday, August 17, 2015 at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church in Kittanning, with the Reverend Douglas E. Dorula, celebrant. Interment with full military honors will be in Lawn Haven Burial Estates.
