A nearly head-on collision at the Kittanning/West Kittanning border of Butler Road last night caused at least two people to be hospitalized last night.
The incident happened about 7:30PM along the popular highway near the intersection with Ferne Drive and caused the roadway to be blocked off for about an hour-and-a-half in either direction.
About a half-dozen West Kittanning volunteer firefighters arrived on-scene due to possible entrapment in the impacted-blue Buick Century and black Ford Fusion, but both drivers were able to escape the vehicles before they arrived after all airbags deployed. Both had to be transported via ambulance.
Both vehicles sustained severe head-on, disabling damage and required to be towed by Morris Tire in Kittanning.
According to firefighters on-scene, the one vehicle was in the wrong lane of travel to impact the crash, and one driver had to be flown to a regional hospital.
West Kittanning Police Officer Chris Airgood and East Franklin Township Police Officer R. Gahagan both investigated the scene while Kittanning Borough Police officers directed drivers from Kittanning to detour along Pine Hill Road.
Emergency officials cleared the scene about 8:40PM to reopen the roadway to other motorists.
