Work Begins Soon on YMCA Annex

Closed since March, the Berdell-Kohl Annex at the Richard G. Snyder YMCA will receive new French drains in the coming weeks.

A minor leak in the Richard G. Snyder YMCA Annex was made even worse after heavy rainfall this spring and will cause some repairs beginning in early July.

According to YMCA officials, the resulting slippery floors present a safety issue which is currently being addressed. After seeking expert opinions and bids from several contractors, the Richard G. Snyder YMCA has elected to move forward with the plan proposed by AES Excavating to excavate and install French drains to divert water around the Annex building and into the existing storm drain system.

In addition to the measures taken to facilitate controlled drainage, while the foundation is exposed, the exterior walls will be sealed against future leaks.

Work on the project is set to begin early July and is scheduled for completion prior to the annual shutdown – which is planned from August 28 through September 7.

The approximately 60-year-0ld Annex will re-open with the rest of the main campus facilities on Tuesday, September 8.

CEO Joely Beeker said the annual shutdown includes, but is not limited to cleaning the Kittanning facility.

“This is our opportunity to drain and clean pools, make any and all repairs in the pump room, paint interior walls where needed, and clean and wax floors,” Beeker said in a press release. “This is more than the day to day cleaning. We really need this time to keep our facility clean and looking new for our members.”

In January, officials recognized the $350,000 in financial pledges by area businessman Stan Berdell and David Kohl for the garage renovations.
