A local family is asking for residents to keep their eyes open for their missing dog before they have to go back home.

Nate and Margaret Shipman of Vermont were in the Craigsville/Worthington area to visit family before their five-year-old dog, Ruby got scared Sunday afternoon and ran into a patch of woods.

“We were here visiting my in-laws, got home from visiting other family and the dog was let out to go the bathroom (and) got spooked at something. She’s been gone for two days now,” Shipman said.

Ruby is described as a shorthaired Great Dane/ Black Lab mix, weighing about 90 pounds, and wearing a plaid red collar with no tags. She is friendly, but probably scared and will bolt away if approached.

“She’s probably very scared right now – don’t try to approach her, but give us a call and we’ll come out,” Shipman said.

Orphans of the Storm animal shelter volunteer Lori Frantz said the family posted notice about Ruby’s disappearance on Facebook

Frantz and fellow volunteer Diana Goslin were out searching for the dog Tuesday and Wednesday evening. If needed, the volunteers also plan to pass out flyers and alert friends later today.

“I feel bad for the family – it’s hard enough to lose your pet, let alone when you’re out of state,” Frantz said. “I know they’ve got to go home, but we’ll have a lot of people still looking for (Ruby).”
Frantz also lost her Beagle/Chihuahua, Emily, for six weeks, so said she knew what the family was going through.

Those who spot Ruby are asked to contact the Shipman Family at 724-297-3073 or the animal shelter at (724) 548-4520
