Local Girl Scouts Host Cookie Social at Kittanning Care Center

Kittanning Care Center residents (seated L-R) Freda Simensky, Rose Heilman, Alma Seibert, and Majorie Rosenberger were surrounded by Daisy Troop 20531 and their famous Girl Scout Cookies and milk for a social event held last Saturday, April 11. Residents at the Kittanning Care Center had a special treat on Saturday. Girl scouts hosted a milk and cookie social that put a smile on every face.

Deb Bouch from Adrian leads Daisy Troop 20531. The troop meets at the Faith Presbyterian Church on Route 268 in East Franklin Township. She explained how the troop got involved with the Kittanning Care Center.

“When we were selling cookies in the season, residents were noticing the cookie boxes that different staff had purchased from either girls in our troop or in other troops. The ‘Dream Team’ came to me and said that some of the residents would really like to have a cookie & milk social. So they purchased cookies for all of the residents in the whole facility to enjoy.”

The troop attempted to sell 30 boxes per girl during this year’s cookie drive, but they did much better than expected.

“Our troop far surpassed our original goal. The average per girl was 150 boxes. This was all made possible from the whole community. They did a wonderful job for little girls.”

Bouch said many people get hungry for the cookies throughout the year, but there were a few varieties that were favorites with their loyal customers.

“It’s a toss-up between the Tag-a-longs®, the Samoas®, and the Thin Mints®. We went through a lot of boxes of those. We (also) have gluten-free. I know our troop has went through two cartons of those (24 boxes). It’s a pretty good seller considering that it’s new. It’s really nice that people can purchase gluten-free cookies now from the Girl Scouts.”

Bouch said over-all cookie sales this year in the region were up from previous years.

“This is the best year we have had as our service unit. They did exceedingly well as a whole Council.”

Bouch estimated the increase in local sales to be approximately 15%.

Although the cookie drive is over within individual troops, Bouch said cookies are still available for sale by contacting the girl scout office at 2359 Freeport Road in North Buffalo Township. Their telephone number is 724-543-2681.
