Route 422 Bridge Replacement Begins in White Township

Work will begin on Wednesday, March 25, on a project to replace the existing two bridges carrying Route 422 over Route 954, South Sixth Street, in White Township, Indiana County.

The construction will close Route 422 East and eastbound traffic will be transferred to State Route 422 West.

A single lane of traffic eastbound and one westbound will be maintained on State Route 422 Westbound.

This $10.2 million bridge replacement project is being constructed by Francis J. Palo, Inc., and is expected to be completed before the end of October 2016.

More than a half-dozen local PennDOT maintenance facilities recently received the Salt Institute’s Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting award, which recognizes road-salt management and storage practices that protect motorists and the environment.

The PennDOT stockpiles, located in Armstrong and Northampton counties, are among 64 transportation facilities across the United States and Canada that applied for and received the award. The institute reviews salt storage as well as facility maintenance and housekeeping practices in evaluating facilities.

The stockpiles receiving the award include:

* Cowansville, Crooked Creek, Distant, Kiski, Kittanning Borough, Kittanning
Township, Snyderville and Worthington in Armstrong County; and
* Danielsville, Hope Road, Newburg and Pen Argyl in Northampton County.

According to the Salt Institute, more than 17 million tons of deicing salt is applied to roadways nationwide each year. In Pennsylvania, PennDOT used an average of more than 913,000 tons of salt in the previous five winters.

PennDOT maintains nearly 40,000 miles of state-owned roadway with more than 5,400 department personnel and 2,250 trucks, plows and salt spreaders.
