Volunteers from the Armstrong Conservation District and Crooked Creek Watershed Association are asking local residents to go grocery shopping this Monday - to assist with their annual food drive to benefit two local food banks.
From 8AM-4PM Monday, January 19 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), volunteers will be at the Kittanning Shop ‘n Save in Franklin Village Mall and at the Indiana Giant Eagle, on Ben Franklin Road, on Monday, January 19th collecting non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the Armstrong Community Action Agency in East Franklin Township and the Indiana County food bank.
In January 2014, OSM/VISTA Brooke Esarey of Blairsville reported that the 10 volunteers collected 189 food items and more than $354 from shoppers throughout the day at two Kittanning supermarkets.
Volunteers across the nation consider Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a “day on, not a day off” by giving their time to serve their communities. An AmeriCorps member from the Armstrong Conservation District, PA Mountain Service Corps, and Crooked Creek Watershed Association, and volunteers from Crooked Creek Environmental Learning Center will participate in this event.
The service project will be one of hundreds held nationwide to honor the legacy of Dr. King. In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, directing the King Center and the Corporation for National and Community Service to carry out a day of service reflecting Dr. King’s life and teachings.
