While adults across the state will cast their votes in today’s General Election, preschool classes at Divine Redeemer School in Ford City decided to hold their own Election Day on Monday.

Each 4 year old was given the opportunity to put an “X” in the box by their favorite “sweet treat” – choosing between Oreo’s, brownies and chocolate chip cookies - using a secret ballot.

Beth Jack’s morning preschoolers cast a split decision, so she will be bringing in Oreo’s and chocolate chip cookies for her morning class since the election ended in a tie.

“They each got their own little ballot and came up to my desk and got to put an ‘x’ in the selection box,” Jack said. “I taught them it’s a secret and they’re not supposed to share because a lot of them kept yelling “I’m winning!”

While the morning class had a tie, Jack’s afternoon class picked chocolate chip cookies as their favorite.

Oreo’s were the favorite in All-Day Preschool Teacher Fran Recupero’s class.

Made up of four-and five year old students, Recupero said her students also enjoyed the election.

“When they came back and voted, we folded up the ballot. When I told them the winner, they were all excited,” Recupero said. “Even though some of their choice of either the brownie or chocolate chip cookie didn’t win, they were still happy.

“There are no losers when you’re getting a treat.”
