06/28/1969 – A half-dozen armed men wearing hoods and gloves, robbed a restaurant and bar along Route 66 south near Leechburg and escaped. Police said the gang entered Veado’s Bar and Grill through a back door about 2:05 AM waving rifles and pistols, and forced Veado Gorelli to empty a cash register. Then they used ropes to tie Gorelli and two waitresses and a cook. Waitress Donna McKee, 35, of Leechburg RD1, worked loose and freed Gorelli along with Cook Glenda King, 25, of East Vandergrift.

06/28/1954 – Borough police were called yesterday to chase three youth off the superstructure of the bridge over the Allegheny River here. Investigating officers said the youth were climbing the steelwork to catch pigeons.

06/28/1949 – The body of 1st Lt. John V. Pekalitsky of Rose Valley was returned to his home for burial today. The 22-year-old flyer was killed in action Jan. 21, 1945 while on a mission with the 15th Air Force.

06/28/1939 – The defunct Farmers National Bank of Leechburg began paying out today its fifth and final dividend amounting to $74,000. The last payment of 13.33 per cent will boost to 86.33 per cent the amount of return to depositors whose funds were tied up when the institution closed its doors in early 1933.

06/28/1929 – John W. Gray, 76, died this morning at his home in Rimersburg. Mrs. Alice Brink, 62, wife of James Brink died at her home in Boggs Township.
06/28/1929 – Memorial services for Mary Copley Thaw, whose death occurred recently, will be held Sunday at Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Thaw paid for the church as a memorial to her father.
