05/24/1969 – S-Sgt. David Lee Fagan, former Works 5 PPG employe at Ford City, retired from military service with 20 years credit to his name on April 30, 1969.

05/24/1969 – The valedictorian and salutatorian of the 1969 graduating class of Dayton High School have been announced as Karen Eileen Schrecengost and Suzanne Lee Travis, respectively.

05/24/1954 – The Rev. Harwood C. Bowman, Jr., rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for the past six years has resigned to become rector of the Church of Our Savior, Washington, D.C..

05/24/1949 –Dr. Elmer F. Rice, pastor of Manorville Grace Lutheran Church, retiring treasurer of Pittsburgh Synod of the United Lutheran Church after 30 years, will be replaced by Paul H. Schnur of Irwin.

05/24/1949 – Howard C. Kelser, president of the Phoenix-Apollo Steel Company, announced today that the plant here has been offered for sale. He said that operations will cease next June 30.

05/24/1944 – At a meeting Monday night in the Pierce Avenue Presbyterian Church, Niagara Falls, N.Y., the congregation voted unanimously to call to that pulpit the Rev. Richard A. Davis, pastor of Rural Valley Presbyterian Church.

05/24/1944 – Of 70 members of the 1944 class of Freeport High School to receive diplomas in commencement exercises held Tuesday night, nine are in the armed forces. Their diplomas were given to members of their families.

05/24/1939 – The class which will be graduated from Ford City High School on June 1 will contain 70 pupils, more than any other graduating class in the history of school. Because of the vastly increased size of the class the site of the annual baccalaureate service, which will be held Sunday evening, has been transferred from the high school auditorium to the new gym.

05/24/1934 – Nathan L. Strong won the Republican nomination for Congress in the 27th district at the primary last week. He had a plurality of 2,361 votes over Robert McEldowney, and his closest competitor in the race.

05/24/1929 – The annual May Day pageant of Ford City Schools was given last night on the lawn of the school. The pageant presented was “Springtime.”

05/24/1929 – Montgomery Ward Company was leased a vacant frontage on Market St. here, adjoining the M. Silverblatt property. Work will start soon on the construction of a two-story building.
