05/23/1969 - Deborah Rae George, junior at Ford City High School, was installed Worthy Advisor in the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Kittanning Assembly, during a ceremony Monday night at the Masonic Temple, Route 85.

05/23/1969 – Seaman Recruit Charles Russ Jr. of 251 North McKean Street, Kittanning, has completed a training course at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Chicago. After a seven-day leave at home, he will report to Norfolk, VA. A 1965 graduate of Kittanning High School, he is a son of Mrs. Pearl Russ of Oak Avenue, Kittanning, and married to the former Carol Myers of Kittanning.

05/23/1969 – Jeffery Haney, 23, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Haney Jr., of Ford City RD2, was promoted to engineer technician second class. Now on his second seven-month tour of duty in Vietnam, he will have completed his military obligation with the U.S. Navy in April 1970. He is married to the former Myrna Klingensmith of Ford Cliff. She is residing in Honolulu until his return from Vietnam.

05/23/1969 – Builder Second Class Glenn Ruffner, USN, son of Mr. & Mrs. C. M. Ruffner of Adrian RD1 is serving with the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 53 at Camp Haskins, Danang, Vietnam.

05/23/1969 – Patrick E. Nelson, recently retired Ford City Police Chief, will be honored at a testimonial dinner June 4 near Butler.

05/23/1964 – Mrs. Roger Olinger, president of the Young Mother’s Circle of First United Methodist Church installed officers for the coming year. Named were Mrs. Miles Brunt, chairman; Mrs. Samuel Luke, vice-chairman; Mrs. Clarence Cornish, recording secretary; Mrs. John Shuttleworth, treasurer and Mrs. Robert Lash, spiritual life secretary.

05/23/1959 – The beauty of an Oriental month of May and festivities of the season provided a theme for the honoring of Miss Loretta Jordan, 1959 Kittanning High School May Queen and her royal court at the May Day coronation at Kit-Han-Ne Field. Royal scepters were presented to Miss Jordan and King Larry Gowetski by knight of honor David Schrecengost.

05/23/1959 – Eleanor Space, Ford City High School senior is among recipients of $800 state scholarships awarded to 80 high school seniors throughout the state.

05/23/1944 – A Kittanning man who was seeking a night’s lodging in the borough lockup fell down a short flight of stairs and broke some ribs.

05/23/1944 – An Eighth AAF Bomber Station England - A second Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal has been awarded to Second Lt. Frank A. Stennet of Kittanning, co-pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress for “meritorious achievement” on 15 bomber attacks on enemy Europe.

05/23/1939 – Four of five scouting units having perfect attendance ratings for the Butler-Armstrong Area “Scouting Day” in Butler were from Armstrong County, it was revealed today.

05/23/1939 – The community youth council, an informal group being organized in Kittanning along the lines of a community planning commission will go before the Kittanning district school board of education to present a proposal for permanent supervision of playground areas. .

.05/23/1934 – Scoring 99.44 per cent in the hotly contested Western Pennsylvania First Aid meet on Carnegie Tech’s campus in Pittsburgh, Boy Scout Troup 35 - the Baptist Church organization - tied with three other of the 48 contestant teams in the meet for third place. The team was comprised of James John, captain; Eugene French, Robert Smith, James Seifert, Charles Stennett and Don Schreckengost. R. J. Axton is troop scoutmaster and “Lon” Painter was trainer of the first aid team.

05/23/1929 – Miss Pauline Reed tendered her letter of resignation as director of music of Kittanning schools. She has accepted a similar position in McKeesport.

05/23/1929 – A petition has been filed in Common Pleas court here for the incorporation of Manorville Methodist Episcopal Church.
