Historical Headlines - April 9

04/09/1969 – The interchange near Kittanning that will connect Allegheny Valley Expressway and Routes 422 and 28 started its first phase this week as bulldozers began to clear area near West Kittanning for storage of equipment and materials, prelude to real work that will start soon on $8.2 million project. Designated Section 11 in official plans, the Kittanning interchange will connect with already completed Section 10 that ended at Slate Lick. The contract includes 3.53 miles of four-lane paved highways and was awarded to the Slate Construction Company of Latrobe. Mild Spring weather helped ease early clearing work.

04/09/1969 – Carl Steffen, executive director of the Armstrong County Planning and Zoning Commission, told Ford City Lions Club members that the future of Ford City depends on access roads to major highways which will be developed in the area. He predicted that the development of the Allegheny Valley Expressway will mean more traffic and more population in the Ford City vicinity. He also said Route 66 will become inadequate and it will become a four-lane highway. He said an important factor will be the attitude of the people, who should practice brotherly love and cooperate with one another, one community with another.

04/9/1969 – The congregation of the Emmanuel (Heilman) Lutheran Church, Garretts Run Road, Ford City RD 1, will hold a special service at 2PM Sunday, April 13, to dedicate the newly decorated church and annex.

04/9/1969 – Mrs. Evelyn Underwood, a former member of Ford City Presbyterian Church, has been ordained as a deacon at the Monongahela Presbyterian Church, it was announced today.

04/9/1969 – The future of Ford City depends on access roads to major highways which will be developed in the area, a professional planner told Ford City Lions Club last night as they met at the Manor Township Fire Hall, McGrann.

04/09/1964 - Kittanning Senior High School math students have distinguished themselves by finishing third in a field of 114 Western Pennsylvania high schools in a recent nationwide algebra test.

04/09/1964 - Francis Laube, new president of Kittanning Country Club and Mrs. L. A. Rosenson, president of the Women’s Association will be honored at the Presidents Ball to be held Saturday night at the clubhouse.

04/09/1959 - Kendrick Walker, owner-manager of Kendrick Walker Motor Company, announced the hiring of William H. Bridge as a sales and promotion assistant.

04/09/1959 - Ford City High School choral groups under direction of Martin Thompson, received high rating in a district music contest at Clarion State Teachers College.

04/09/1954 - Trustees of First Baptist Church, Kittanning, have bought an adjoining N. McKean St. property for use in future expansion of the church auditorium.

04/09/1954 – Sagamore - The State Bureau of Mines will begin extinguishing a gob pile fire which has been injurious to property and health of local residents.

04/09/1954 – Ford City — Eljer Company Controller R. J. Gillespie submitted his resignation as an officer and director of the plumbingware firm, president B. C. Gould announced.

04/09/1949 - A pedestrian lay in a semi conscious state at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital after being struck by a truck on East Brady road, three miles south of Kaylor, George Hoffman, 37, of East Brady RD 1 suffered possible skull fractures, contusions of the right elbow and laceration to the right side of his face.

04/09/1949 - Members of Kittanning Presbytery ordained George William Bingaman, son of Rev. S. R. Bingaman, pastor of Freeport Presbyterian Church and Mrs. Bingaman to the gospel ministry. The charge to the young minister was given by his father.

04/09/1934 - Temperatures dropped to the freezing mark this morning, the mercury registering 32 degrees at 6 a.m.

04/09/1934 - Residents of East Brady are preparing for an aggressive fight to get a new and adequate bridge across the river there. The state is preparing now to erect a temporary bridge to replace the one washed out by the ice and high water this spring but a new bridge, high enough to care for navigation, is desired by residents

04/09/1929 - Mrs. Sarah A. Dixon, wife of rural route mail carrier D. A. Dixon died at her home on Orr Ave.
