Historical Headlines - April 8

04/07/1969 – On April 7, Mr. & Mrs. Myrl Fisher of Garretts Run Road, Ford City RD1, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married in the parsonage of the Dime Reformed Church of Rural Valley, by the Rev. W. H. Kerschner. Prior to his retirement in 1953, Fisher was a track foreman for the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railroad, which later merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. They had four sons: Myrl, Jr. of Niagara Falls, NY; Dale of Smicksburg; Clair of Indiana; and Calvin (deceased. They had three daughters: Mrs. Irene Smith of Kittanning; Mrs. William Condron of Ford City RD1; and Mrs. Margaret Blystone (deceased). On April 30, the couple will also be celebrating their joint birthday. Fisher will be 79 and his wife will be 80 years old.

04/08/1969 – Sirloin steak advertised at $1.19 a pound at Foodland.

04/08/1969 – Dennis P. Scott, 19, of 419 Fair Street, Kittanning, will enter the U. S. Military Academ at West Point, New York, in July 1. Scott, a 1968 graduate of Kittanning High School, is a freshman at Washington and Jefferson College. The future cadet is the son of Thomas E. Scott, a field investigator for the State, and Mrs. Scott; has two brothers and a sister. They attend First Baptist Church in Ford City.

04/08/1969 – A speeding car ran out of control on N. Grant Ave, struck a parked truck, and knocked out the window in Erdos Furniture Store. The driver, Joseph G. Miller, of Kittanning RD6, suffered a cut eye and had to be treated at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Police said he would be charged with reckless driving. The crash occurred at 1:20 AM this morning.

04/08/1969 – Charles E. Glendening, son of Mrs. & Mrs. Charles E. Glendening of Kittanning RD7, is one of 800 men in the nation to receive a four-year Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) college scholarship. The scholarship will pay for tuition, fees, textbooks, and laboratory expenses. It also provides a monthly subsistence allowance.

04/08/1969 – Voters of Ford City and Ford Cliff Borough may decide a merger proposition at the coming May primary, according to action last night by Ford City Borough Council at its meeting in the Borough Building.

04/08/1969 – Russell Davis was elected last night to fill the unexpired term of Peter Relich as councilman from Kittanning’s fourth ward.

04/08/1964 - Proposals to split some school district today compounded the woes of Armstrong County School Board in its struggle to comply with a state order to streamline operations. Reorganization plans of Ford City Union. Apollo Area Joint and Elderton Joint schools were outlined for the board by representatives of the school districts

04/08/1959 - The Rev. Fred Daubenspeck, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ford City, is a surgery patient at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, hospital officials said.

04/08/1959 - James Snyder, 13, of Columbus Ave., Ford Cliff is in fair condition at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital after being hit by a vehicle. Snyder, who was riding a bicycle at the time of the accident, suffered fractures of both legs and injuries to the right ear, left side of forehead and left side of chest.

04/08/1954 - Worthington - West Franklin Joint School System has formally requested admission to Kittanning Area Secondary School System because lack of proper facilities “make it necessary that the high school join with another district.”

04/08/1954 - APOLLO — Patrolman Gus Zanos will stay on the police force here, he told councilmen at an adjourned meeting.

04/08/1954 - FORD CITY — John Wilson was elected president of Ford City Education Association at a meeting of teacher in Ford City High School auditorium.

04/08/1949 - HARRISBUGH — Gov. James H. Duff signed a bill increasing the pay of Pennsylvania jurors from $4 to $5 a day, effective Jan. 1, 1950.

04/08/1949 - An estimated 450 persons applauded Kittanning Men’s Chorus as the singers presented a concert in the high school auditorium.

04/08/1949 - James F. Rau was installed exalted ruler of Kittanning Elks Lodge in ceremonies conducted by officers of the Apollo lodge.

04/08/1944 - Major T. Craig McKee. Kittanning doctor serving with the U.S. Army in England has been elected to fellowship in the Royal Society of Medicine, England and to honorary membership in the Middlesex County Medical Society. He has also been named an honorary member of the staff on West Middlesex County Hospital, largest in the British Isles.

04/08/1939 - One of the oldest fraternal organizations in Armstrong County, Kittanning Odd Fellows lodge, will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its founding in the lodge hall, Jacob St.

04/08/1939 - Armstrong County Christian Endeavor Chorus, under direction of Mrs. H. T. Showers of Ford City, will present the Easter cantata, “Rabboni.” in First Presbyterian Church here.

04/08/1929 - County Commissioners were at Dayton obtaining right of way from the end of the concrete paving to Dayton, a distance of approximately three miles. A contract for the improving of this section of road was let several weeks ago.
