Ivan Jagersky, Instructor for Project Educate, said the program encourages participation of parents and family.
“For the past few years, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation has been working with students ages 14-21. These students have challenges with their career choices and getting a job.”
The workshops are scheduled on the second Tuesday of each month in Kittanning and run from 6:00-7:30 PM.
“We present various transition topics that will help the students and families to make a more informed transition. Topics are soft skills for employment, to different funding resources that are available for universities. Tomorrow night’s series will be about money management. The topic is for both the student and the parents. We would like them to come together so they can learn together. We will have a presenter from the Armstrong Associates Federal Credit Union. She will talk about how to create and use a personal budget, importance of saving – which is a really interesting topic with students with disabilities since previously anyone receiving SSDI or SSI had a cap on how much money they could save. That has now changed. It is called an ABLE savings account, where they can save now like any other member of the population. We will also learn how to responsibly use credit and debit cards, and how to be safe with your money, especially with online transactions.”
Complimentary beverages and snacks will be provided. While walk-ins are welcome, for more information or to reserve a seat, call 724-841-9711.
Topics to be discussed in the next few months include:
February 12 - Financial aid for post-secondary education and job training
March 12 - Assistive technology & soft skills for employment
April 9 - Job interview, retention, and advancement skills
May 14 - Transition 101: Preparing for the year ahead and beyond
