10/29/1968 – The full extent of the fish kill in the Allegheny River caused by a heavy discharge of oil waste into the river out of Bear Creek near Bruin – won’t be known for several days. Observers at Lock 7 and 8 said there was no large fish kill, except for small minnows which normally swim near the surface of the water. Large fish have been seen in apparent distress but not head in large numbers. The white, icy-looking waste material is from a storage lagoon owned by the American International Refining Corporation, located in Bruin.
10/29/1968 – Candidate for State Auditor General Robert Casey was speaker at last night’s fundraiser at the Latin American Club in Ford City. He was joined at the head table by Democratic County Chairman Carl Culp, Ray Heilman (candidate for state senator), John P. Murtha (candidate for congress), C. Doyle Steele (seeking re-election to State House), Leo Woyton (candidate for State House), and Peter Vessella of New Castle (vice-president of Young Democrats of America).
10/29/1968 – Heat has been finally restored at Kittanning Central and Junior High School as the season’s first cold snap continued. The new gas-fired boilers replacing coal-fired boilers are now supplying heat for both buildings.
10/29/1968 – There were 78 persons attending the 60th wedding anniversary open house on October 27 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence B. Neal on North Grant Avenue in Kittanning. The table was highlighted by a five-tier wedding cake baked by Reed Neal of Dayton.

10/29/1963 - Ford City- The tank at Works 4 of Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. here is undergoing extensive alteration and modernization, an indication that the plant will continue plate glass production for some time at least. Works Manager E. J. Hazen said the tank work has nothing to do with the new float glass process which is being installed in the company’s Cumberland, MD, plant.

10/29/1953 - A 47 year old Templeton man, Walter Ruth, was given hope todya that the sight could be saved in his left eye, injured this week in a blasting accident.
10/29/1953 - Pittsburgh and Shawmut’s first diesel locomotive made its first run between Brookville and Timblin.
10/29/1953 - Funeral services were held at Brick Church for James M. Wright of Ford City RD 1, who died of car accident injuries received at Kepples Corners.
10/29/1948 - Reburial plans were completed for a Kittanning soldier who lost his life on the way home from the European fighting in WWII. Wilson P. Anderson was killed in a truck accident in Lyons, France.
10/29/1948 - A 12 year old girl received burns last night as the Halloween parade got underway in Kittanning. She is Elva Huffhand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Huffhand of Manorville. Elva’s clothing became ignited from a spark from a stick of “red fire”.
10/29/1943 - Outstanding amongst entries in an annual mummers’ parade held as part of Kittanning’s Halloween celebration was a tiered wedding cake costume complete with candles worn over the shoulders of one of the marchers.
10/29/1943 - Two Army officers escaped injury and their plane, a single engine Army trainer, was undamaged when they made a forced landing in a field on the John Reed farm near West Kittanning. The plane was piloted by Captain I.C. Terrett of Goodfellow Field, TX.

Department of Public Assistance, quartered on 2nd and 3rd floors of the Commercial Hotel Building, Ford St., since its organization January 1, will expand floor space area to include all the first floor of the building with exception of that portion occupied by Post’s Dairy Store.
